About Merseyside

Merseyside is a metropolitan area in Northwest England which is centred on both banks of the lower reaches of the Mersey Estuary. It comprises five metropolitan boroughs: Wirral, St Helens, Sefton, Knowsley, and the city of Liverpool.

Merseyside has a population of 1.4 million and is host to some world-famous cultural and sporting icons.

About Liverpool

Liverpool is a port city built upon where the river Mersey meets the Irish Sea. In the 18th to the early 20th centuries Liverpool was a key trade and migration port. Its wealth was based upon the slave trade between Africa and the Caribbean, importing sugar, coffee and tobacco whilst exporting manufactured goods made in the industrial heartlands of Northwest England.

Ferries cross the Mersey throughout the day, and the Pier Head on the riverfront hosts the iconic mercantile buildings known as the “Three Graces” – Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building.

Liverpool is perhaps most famous for being the hometown of The Beatles.

Liverpool also hosts two famous football clubs. Liverpool FC – the famous football club has its home at Anfield. Everton FC – the lesser-known football club plays its matches at Goodison Park.
