Wirral Chamber of Commerce recruits LJMU Journalism graduate Jessica Etherington as their Press & PR Officer.
The objective of the Wirral Chamber of Commerce is to create a business environment stimulating growth, employment, and economic prosperity for both its members and Wirral alike. It achieves this through engagement so its members are aware about the support mechanisms available, so important for business growth.
Having worked closely for a number of years, Graham Maddrell, Wirral Chamber’s Marketing Manager, contacted Steve Wood with an opportunity for a Graduate Press and PR Officer to support and promote the Wirral Chamber across the borough. Having referred many of the Chamber members to Graduate to Merseyside, Graham is now experiencing the service directly himself.
Steve was quickly able to source a number of suitable individuals and LJMU Journalism Graduate Jessica Etherington stood out as an outstanding candidate and was offered the role. With press & PR experience at the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo, as well as Liverpool Student Union (LSU) and experience in Digital Marketing as a Content Manager, she was exactly what Wirral Chamber wanted.
Three months later, Jessica is making a real impact working on a number of PR and marketing initiatives, including various press release, social media development, website updates, promotional materials, and engaging with Wirral Chamber members to advise and guide about press opportunities and events, such as the recent Wirral Business Awards 2014, attended by over 500 leading business people. Graham is extremely pleased with Jess and the service from Graduate to Merseyside:
“It is always difficult for a new member of the team to hit the ground running, but with nearly 500 Chamber members it is vital that staff use their initiative and are enthusiastic about the work they are carrying out. Jess has certainly supported our work in producing and publicising the success stories about our business community, and, in particular, she now looks after our social media accounts enabling us daily contact to over 3,500 followers of the Chamber.”
Jessica is also very happy in her new role and with Graduate to Merseyside:
“When I read the job description for Press & PR Officer at the Wirral Chamber I thought it suited me down to a tee. My university course was extremely practical and this, combined with work experience I have completed over the years, meant that I already had the skills I needed to go straight into the job. Steve Wood from Graduate to Merseyside has been really supportive and kept in touch with me during the interview process and even came to see me at work recently to check on my progress.
“I really enjoy the job. I have been able to attend some exciting events, including business lunches with Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor George Osborne, together with the Wirral Business Awards, one of the regions largest business events. I have already met many new contacts, and with the Wirral Chamber of Commerce growing rapidly, I feel extremely privileged to be part of this growth.”
Jessica has shown that graduates not only bring their degree to your company but also a variety of skills, experiences and a fresh perspective that can make a real long term impact.
If you’re a business in Merseyside and looking for fresh ideas and new skills that a Graduate can bring then Graduate to Merseyside can help.
Graham Maddrell added, “The Graduate to Merseyside initiative has proved time after time that it can and does offer unique and vital services to the business world. It offers a different perspective to company requirements, many of which may not have considered this as an option. I would certainly recommend that if you are in business and need specialist support then Graduate to Merseyside is a friendly and very supportive service.”
